Summary : Fantastic little clock radio..

Brilliant machine. I purchased this recently as my old one packed up, and I am very happy with it. It looks modern, and stylish. All the buttons are easily found, and very easy to use.

The large and bright green clock is very clear and easy to see at night. Setting up the clock is easy, and for those of you who are fussy, you can even set it to the exact second.

There are two independent alarms, one for buzzer, and one for the radio, although I much prefer the radio to the loud beep beep of the buzzer. I'm a tad disappointed there aren't 'two' radio alarms, on this you can only choose radio, buzzer, or both but that's not a problem as you can set them for different times anyway. Oh, and there's a BIG snooze button right at the front for those extra minutes in the morning.

The reception from the radio is as good as you can expect from Sony, very clear and without any crackling. Quite loud too for a clock radio.

Great value for money, very stylish, and funky.

Summary : Don't let its good looks deceive you!

This was bought as a present for me for my birthday. It has impressive looks, and specification, but if you want to use it's alarm clock function, then FORGET IT!!
When waking up to Dab for instance, radio comes on pleasantly quietly. Fine!...then the volume steps up slightly, Still ok!...then it steps up again, then again...WWWHOOOAAAAA!!!
If you think you are going to get woken up gently, think again! Probably more likely it will have you soiling your bed with fright!!
Looks like this is the norm judging by other reviewers on here, and from Intempo's helpline.
I cannot seriously believe they have marketed this item as an alarm clock, with the actual alarm being it's one serious flaw, a very very unacceptable flaw at that.
I was so sure that this in no way could be a designed feature of the clock, that I returned my first unit...then was absolutely sickened to find out the replacement was exactly the same....then thats when my further research proved that this WAS the norm!!! utterly unbelievable!!!!! This second one is now going back, and I will look for something similar from a different manufacturer...trouble is, there's not a lot of these about!! The other thing that appealed to me was that apparently this was made in England (Manchester), seems the theory is right that we can't make anything here in the U.K.!!
Avoid this if you are looking for an alarm clock!!!

Summary : why oh why?

First impressions are that this is a great little alarm clock with lots of features - 20 radio pre-sets, 2 alarm types, snooze function, nap timer... however there are a few pitfalls.

Ever fancies a 45min nap in the afternoon? You can't have one as the nap function jumps from 30 to 60mins.. they really should have provided a function to set your own nap length.

Perhaps the most annoying feature on this alarm clock however is the backlight. If you're finding it hard to get to sleep at night, even on the lowest setting, the backlight shines brightly in a dark room.

If these problems don't bother you however, this is a fairly smart, compact alarm clock... just a couple of improvements however would make a world of difference.

However...
When playing the ipod through the dock the sound quality is that of a badly tuned radio AND there is a quite horrid whine when the Ipod changes track.

Summary : Excellent radio alarm clock...but the display is an issue

I purchased this alarm clock/radio principally because it has a dual alarm system (and shows both alarm times in seperate windows) and because the brightness of the display can be adjusted. The radio reception is excellent and very clear. The whole system is easy to set up and the sleep button together with the seperate nap alarm are easy to use. But there is a downside which has been mentioned before - the display disappears once the clock is higher than eye level. My bedside locker is about 3 inches higher than my bed and when I have my head on my pillow the time is practically invisible. However, I turned the clock slightly away from my bed and the numbers did become visible (although not strongly). It is a bit annoying and for the price you pay you would expect the time to be visible. It is also a bit fiddly trying to turn off the alarms as there are quite a lot of buttons on this machine that are shaped the same. Small gripes only though!

Summary : Great clock radio

I've had mine for a few months now and am really pleased with it. I found it easy to set up and intuitive although at first there do appear to be a lot of buttons to navigate.

One of the really useful things is the ability to set 2 alarms for different times. Great if, on a regular basis, you get up at a different time.

Radio reception is very good and sound quality as you'd expect from a Sony.

My only gripe is that, as mentioned in other reviews, the display only works when your eye is above or level with the unit. At night with my head on the pillow the display can't be read so you have to lift your head up to see what time it is. Maybe a minor niggle but one that should really be resolved.

Overall though, very good.

Large display makes it easy to read at night in one glance. Very easy to use. Reliable. Only drawback is that it is slightly bulky (thus missing some 'style' points, but I would not really expect anything different at this pice).

I have had two as I received a replacement for the first one but the second one had the same fault. The alarm goes off at the wrong time and after that you cannot switch the appliance off. Big disappointment

Summary : just perfect!

This really is the ultimate alarm clock! To wake up to your fave song on your Ipod every morning is sheer decadence and to have the choice of buzzer alarm or radio alarm is handy too. It gets louder and louder in the morning unless you touch a button so its a very effective alarm clock and also has a very large snooze button on the top-handy! This is a glorified docking station, and charges any Ipod, together with being a handy Soundwall so really has many more useful applications that a convential soundwall. The bright blue digital display has a dimmer facility;useful as in a dark bedroom the bright display prevents you from sleeping as it lights up the entire room its that bright! The sound quality is first class and offers a good depth of sound. It even sets its own clock by cleverly tuning itself into radio stations and taking the time from the rds on the radio! clever! The previous reviewer does mention a few limitations but these dont bother me at all. This is a very cool looking piece and overall meets my needs perfectly. Your Ipod when docked gets lit up by a blue light making it look very swish! Highly recommended!

Summary : A Welcome Morning Call

The Sony ICF-C317 does the job it's supposed to. Its 'standing-on-four-feet' position is quickly got used to and the large snooze button will be welcomed by many. The green LED display, however, seems overly bright to me and a dimmer option would make more sense. Also, being picky here, I would have liked the 'Radio On' button to be a bit more prominent. Having said all this, the sound quality is really quite good, especially for talking. You could pay a lot more for something that does a similar job. This model is ok. Happy Listening!

Summary : Very poor product - stay away!

This product has major flaws

1) Tiny display and fonts with poor backlight and at wrong angle from typical sleeping position (it faces more upwards than sideways)

2) Impossible to set alarm wake up volume in MP3 mode. The default volume is very loud. Gradual volume wake up is obviously not available either

3) Exteremly loud/screeching alarm buzzer sound (impossible to adjust volume)

The only postive is the reasonable sound quality given the unit size

My frustrating search for a decent mp3 alarm clock continues (see my review for the ihome 26). I find it amazing that no one (including the big brands like Philips, Sony etc) have designed a product with these basic features, expecially since they are available on most CD alarm clocks.

Summary : gorgeous yet disappointing...

I bought this bad boy for my dads birthday present and was totally excited about it as it seemed to be everything he could possibly want in one little machine. When it arrived I was overall delighted with the item, so was daddy!

But he later had a real go with it and discovered how disappointing it really is. Although the design is beautiful, the sound is FANTASTIC, it was the radio that really really lets it down. The wire areal is only a foot long so every single station is hissy and crackly. Also, when searching for stations manually, you can only jump up in 2s on the odd numbers only. so for example stations like 105.4 or 106.2 cannot be found! It was impossible to get any kind of decent reception or any good stations. For this amount of money I would expect it to have a digital readio in it, or at least a better one. When looking up this problem in the manual it suggest you find somewhere else in the house to put it to get better signal which is hardly useful when its a bedside alarm clock, where else other than the bed is there to put it?!

The other annoying thing was the dimming background light. although this was one feature which made me initially want to buy it more, it was actually a bit too sensitive. when the room was totally dark, the background light was so dull it was almost impossible to read the time!

It such a shame that the main selling feaure of this product, ie the radio, is what lets it down. But like i said, the sound quality from the ipod is amazing and it looks gorgeous. Shame about the radio.

Summary : Not cheap, but worth it for the extra minutes of peace in bed!

We bought this clock for our 3 year old son as a way of trying to stop him rushing into our bedroom as soon as he woke up in the morning (whatever time that might be), and it has been a great success. The clock has been designed in a fun way, with ears that move and eyes and mouth that open and close depending on whether the alarm is set. If you wish you can have an audible alarm, but we find the rabbit being awake or asleep enough. If our son wakes up and the bunny is still asleep he knows to wait till the bunny wakes up! He carries it around with him and it has been robust enough to put up with most that has been done to it.

Just once, when it fell off his chair onto a wooden floor, the mechanism jammed (the ears are a little vulnerable), but I was able to remove the back and fix it. The only other negative point (which goes for many analogue alarm clocks) is that as our son goes to bed around 8pm and we want him to stay in bed till 7.30 or 8am, we have to initially set the alarm to about 7.15 - any later and the bunny wakes up again immediately. Then we go into his room later in the evening to move the alarm to the desired time.

In summary, its quite a bit of money for a clock but its well designed, robust, gives you more sleep time, and hopefully will help your child to tell the time into the bargain. Doesn't appear to be heavy on the AA batteries either.
