Oregon Scientific are at the forthfront of digital weather stations,you can pay a four figure sum for a very technical weather observatory as used by the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue team in Snowdonia (i know because i have seen it in operation at their main base just above Tryfan in the Nant Francon Valley)or you can pay a very reasonable sum for this excellent non technical weather station.

I have three different ones all by Oregon including this model and they give a very realistic outlook on forthcoming weather.Knowing a little bit about heat and humidity does help but you can easily have little knowledge about the weather and still find these instruments very informative.With a new set of quality batteries which can last up to two years you get a very high quality product that is very enjoyable to observe and also pretty accurate.

These weather stations make excellent gifts for any occassion and will last many years,one of mine is now twelve years old and still looking like new and working perfectly.Most people like to talk about the weather so buy somebody you care about and interesting and long lasting gift that is different every day of the year.

Summary : You get what you pay for

Complete rubbish. On/off switch doesn't work; constant background humming; alarming heat generated; the ipod dock is awkward and flimsy; the sound is acceptable only for speech. This hasn't even lasted 4 months. I won't send it back because I can't bear the thought of getting a replacement.

Summary : Does the job

Main factor when buying a DAB clock radio? A display that doesn't bathe your whole room in blue light all night - and finally I found it in the Gemini 26. Had a Bug, it bugged me. Got a Sony, had to put masking tape over the display. The display on this brightens and darkens according to the light available - in the dark you don't notice it's there.

Four alarms are handy, meaning you don't have to re-set the alarm at the weekend.

There's only half a dozen or so presets available, but who listens to more than half a dozen radio stations anyway? And the aerial may just be the thin cable style, ie not telescopic, but it holds stations real well.

Okay, audio quality isn't wonderful - but I don't need pumping bass in the bedroom, just some sounds to send me to sleep and wake me again. The Gemini does everything I want it to do.

Summary : Great Alarm Clock, would have been better with a battery in it.

I love the features of this radio. The sound quality is good, I like the way you can adjust the brightness and the 2 alarms are great for couples who have 2 seperate wake-up times.
My only gripe is that after a power failure you have to re-program the whole clock, including all you pre-set radio stations. A simple back-up battery could have prevented this.

Summary : Excellent Value

This piece of kit represents excellent value for money.

On the plus side it looks great (particularly if you have a silver bedside phone close by). It also has some genuinely useful features. For instance, the ability to set the radio and buzzer alarm concurrently and independently is nice. It means you can take an impromptu siesta and use the buzzer to waken you for the footy results, without interfering with your regular morning radio alarm setting. Also, the radio has a sleep timer for those who like to float away with the airwaves at night. It also has a nice big snooze button. The major plus though is the large, clear display - easily perceptible through hazy spectacle-less 4-AM eyes.

At this price something had to give, and it is the features you might expect as standard but in all probability will not miss. You cannot adjust the brightness of the display. This may or may not bother you during the night. Also, there is only one buzzer to (not) choose from, and it is akin to a lorry reversing into your bedroom. OK, it'll waken the heaviest sleeper, but the ability to fade it in would perhaps have prevented an early morning heart attack or two. It doesn't really matter; as if you have any sense you'll waken to the radio instead.

On the whole, for the good looks and large, clear display - indisputably worth the lolly.

Summary : GREAT cd/radio - NOT GREAT ALARM!!

I bought this as a treat for myself a few months ago, the cd and remote control a selling point. BUT THE ALARM IS APPALLING!! After being kept awake longer than desirable by the glare of the time (dimming does not really make much difference here), you will be 'jolted' awake each morning (so will everyone else in your house). Trying to reduce the volume is a losing battle, it just keeps on increasing. Tried switching it off and back on, but this did not always work either. The last straw was when the alarm failed to come on at all. It looks nice enough and works ok as just a cd/radio, but for the price especially, I expected much better quality. Use it as an alarm at your peril. I am relieved though, that my experience is not unique, I thought I had bought a faulty one. I have returned it, and no questions were asked when I gave the reason (not even checked to see it was a valid reason....). Intend to buy one manufactured by BUSH; well-what have I got to lose?!

Summary : Good but not perfect

For the money, this appears to be a good product (that said I don't have any experience of other docking stations). The build quality is good and it sounds OK - good enough for listening to in the bedroom anyway. The buttons feel good and the LED display is nice. Overall I am very happy with this item.

Things which could be improved (and really easy too I would think)

1. The LED display can be dimmed, which is a nice touch. BUT, it doesn't save the dimmed setting, so you need to do this each time you use the docking station - why?

2. The volume, on minimum the sound is still quite loud, not uncomfortably, but still higher than I would like, expecially as I listen to this at night time. I found this with my ipod too, so maybe I have sensitive ears or the volume is controlled from the Ipod - not convinced.

3. The remote control, a great feature but badly implemented. Yes, even when you are next to the docking station, it is handy not to have to reach out to change track. The remote control is not backlit\glo-in-the-dark and the layout choice is not very intiutive.

4. AM reception - maybe it is just mine, but I couldn't get a decent AM signal, even with the aerial fully extended.

So overall not a bad item, well priced but a few - easily solved - problems.

Would I recommend - yes with the above explanation.

Summary : Keep looking...

My first impressions of this clock were good. It looks nice, and the features sound pretty good. But as soon as I got it home, I noticed the first problem - the display. Obviously the display is the most important feature for a clock...which is why I find it hard to accept that Sony designed a display that can only be seen when horizontal or higher. My bedside table is slighter higher (~4 inches) than my bed and I can't read the digits. Incredible. You can change the brightness, but this makes no difference.

It wasn't long before I got tired of the buzzer alarm. It's not as bad as some others, but it's still quite lethal. I started setting the radio to go off 10 minutes before I get up, then the buzzer alarm kicks in. This combo makes waking up painless, but the poor quality of the speaker is immediately obvious when listening to the radio. Also, the radio doesn't auto-tune and doesn't do anything fancy like show the station name.

The overall build quality is ok, and the footprint is acceptably small. The daylight savings button is in a seriously bad place though, it's easy to press it when grappling for the clock in the dark.

If you're considering this alarm clock, I'd keep looking if I were you.

Summary : Disappointing

Agree entirely with the review that mentions the humming noise. I tracked this down to the external transformer/plug which hummed loudly when plugged into a plasterboard wall. OK when used in a socket in an external brick wall, but this is useless if there isn't one near your bedside table!
The worst feature, which was laughable really, was the auto-dimming display. Nice, bright, large digits in a well-lit room, but turn off the light and it auto-dims down to what the good people at Bush have deemed to be a suitable non-intrusive dark room level. Nice idea, but the display instantly becomes unreadable and might as well be off. I searched the simple but limited menu system for a setting which might help this, but to no avail. I didn't buy from Amazon and paid more, but got a full refund the next day. Probably great for use on a desk against an external wall, but hopeless as a bedside alarm. Still looking for something that does the job of a fairly standard digital clock radio but with DAB and a headphone socket.

Summary : Great Alarm clock. Clear display, easy to use/set, reliable and solid

I had the same alarm for 20 years (bear in mind I'm 21!) and it was my Grandad's for a while before I had it. However its the size of half my room so I got a fancy one with nature sounds. I had it for 2 months then all of a sudden I heard a loud "pop" and it was gone.

This one is great though. It seems so well built. The radio is great, very clear. It picks up stations that the radio in the bathoom next door cant pick up.

Alarm is very simple to set. So is the clock itself. I never read the booklet or anything and set it up with no worries.

Also, the display is crystal clear! I have the clock on my chest of drawers, which is about a foot higher than my matteress, so the clock itself is a good 4/5 inches above my eye level when in bed. I was worried that because of this I wouldnt be able to see the display (especially because the clock's display is ever so slightly tilted upwards), but it is still crystal clear from below eye level.

Well recommended.

Summary : Some Design Flaws

This looks a great clock, and works really well. However, it is so fiddly to set up, which wouldn't be a problem if you only had to do it once. However, there's no emergency battery back up, which given the price of the clock is a terrible oversight. I've suffered 2 power cuts in the last month and spent ages having to reset it. I'm now looking for a replacement as I can't risk a further power cut during the night!!

Summary : Good, but a few minor flaws and one major flaw

As ever with Pure Digital, the Chronos hardware looks good and is well built. The triangular body is very stable and has slightly sticky rubber feet, so will not slide when you fumble for it in the dark. The buttons are winning me over with time; they originally seemed too small and shiny but, in fact, are perfectly distinguishable and require just the right amount of pressure to activate them. There also seemed rather a lot of them at first, but one button corresponding to one function turns out to a better solution for the circumstances than the press-and-turn controls on most other digital radios. A possible improvement would have been to differentiate a couple of the buttons, say power on and sleep, by a rough surface.

The only real problem I have with the hardware is that it has a lot of seams and crannies which quickly collect dust and are difficult to clean; it would also have been helpful had the aluminium front not had four pieces of text (such as "DAB Digital Radio" and other fairly obvious statements) disfiguring its clean lines.

The tuning, station finding and tweaking interface is exactly the same as other Pure Digital radios, so need not be described here. I disagree with a previous reviewer about the sound quality; it is certainly better than average, with no boxiness or tinniness, and is a fine achievement for a relatively small plastic box.

The major flaw is the display. There are only two brightness settings (high and low), with the brightness control rather awkwardly placed at the back of the unit, and even the low setting is much too intense for a dark room whereas the high setting is unusable. I question whether the display colouring (light blue on mid blue), which is unchanged from Pure Digital's "kitchen" clock radios, is appropriate and would have been better replaced with something on black: failing that, there should be a wide range of brightness settings. Another problem is with the clock display in standby (no radio playing, which will be the norm for most users); there is either a two-line display with time on the top and date on the bottom - the second being pointless - or a one-line double-height time display with oddly thin and unpleasant digits. As an aside, it is worth noting that the firmware is not upgradeable (via USB link), unlike that of most other Pure Digital products, so you will be stuck with the poor clock display.

The issues I have highlighted aside, this is a good "first clock radio" by Pure Digital and costs not much more than a high-quality analogue clock radio with PLL.
